Saint John, nicknamed Love City, is one of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea and an unincorporated territory of the United States. Located just about four miles east of Saint Thomas (the territory’s capital), Saint John is the smallest of the three main US Virgin Islands. It is also four miles southwest of Tortola, part of the British Virgin Islands and approximately 60% of the island is protected by the Virgin Islands National Park.
The Virgin Islands became part of the United States in 1917 when it was purchased for $25 million in gold. The purchase was made as a strategic move during World War I to maintain control over the Caribbean and Panama Canal. Post-war has seen a rise in tourism to the main islands including St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John–making it an attractive location for businesses.
